Zenith Cruzer

Because the holes from Zenith don't line up perfectly, I have this slight dip in the trailing edge of the elevator. It's very slight, and the other side seems fine.

Here's another shot. What I'm going to do is run a string on the trailing edge from one end to the other and see if they match. If they do, I'm good to go. If they don't, I will probably run this by Zenith.

NOTE: One thing I learned from building the RV-7 is to never drill and install end caps like wing tips, or the horiz stab tips until, in this case, the elevator is connected to the horiz stab.

Same with ailerons, (although not applicable on the Cruzer) never drill the wingtips until the ailerons are on the wing.

Zenith's instructions have the builder build the horiz stab and then drill and rivet the plastic stab tips without having the elevator attached. If the builder follows the instructions here, there's a very good chance that the tip of the elevator won't match the horiz stab tip.

Wait until the stab is mounted and the elevators are attached to install the tips!

I didn't get a pic, but when I first started the rudder I stopped after the first few steps because I didn't have #20 drill bits. Now that I have the bits, I went back and opened all the holes to #20. See 30oct15 and 31oct15

Then I started working on the rudder tip.

I cut it out per the dimensions in the manual but I found it much easier to cut with a Dremel than with shears.

After it was rough cut, I laid two pieces of sandpaper on the workbench and sanded the bottom smooth and even.

Marked the 10mm line on the rib...

Take note-the manual indicates that a slot is needed in the rear of the plastic tip to fit the rib. Mine does not appear to need the slot cut out. Final fit into the rudder will determine if it's needed, but don't be in a rush to just automatically cut an ugly slot if it's not needed!

Next I marked a 10mm line on the tip and measured and drilled the 5 holes.

Those holes get match drilled to the rib.

Stop here! This is the same situation as I mentioned about the elevator. How far fore/aft do I know to mount this rudder tip? I don't! Not until I build the vert stab and connect it to the rudder will I know where to position the rudder tip so that the leading edge matches the vert stab.
